Publishers are asked not to mail books for the Prize Committees to the GSA Main Office, but to the respective Prize Committee members themselves. Each year, the Prize Committees will be posted on this web site. If the new Committees have not yet been posted, kindly wait until they have been, and these names have been posted. Mailing books to the GSA Main Office will only delay their consideration, since they will have to be re-mailed.

The DAAD Book Prize of the GSA

This prize is funded through the North American office of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and carries an award of $1,000. Under the provision of the DAAD grant, eligibility is restricted to authors who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States and Canada. The prize is awarded under GSA rules by a GSA committee, alternating between the two groups of academic disciplines represented in the Association, and is presented during the banquet of the GSA Annual Conference.

(1) The award for books in the fields of German language and literature, cultural studies, and the humanities is offered in even-numbered years. All books published during the preceding two years are eligible.

(2) The award for books in the fields of history, political science, and other social sciences is offered in odd-numbered years. All books published during the preceding two years are eligible.

Translations, editions, anthologies, memoirs, and books that have been previously published are not eligible.

The Sybil Halpern Milton Memorial Book Prize

This prize of $1,000 is funded by private contributions in honor of the noted historian, archivist, curator, and long-time member of the German Studies Association, Sybil Halpern Milton.

The prize will be awarded annually for the best book dealing with Nazi Germany and the Holocaust in its broadest context, covering every field represented in the association, including history, political science, and other social sciences, literature, art, and photography.

There are no restrictions on the language or type of book, but it must be an original publication. There is also no restriction on the authors' citizenship or residence.

The Selection Process

To be considered, books for the Book Prizes of the Association must be nominated by the author and/or publisher. These nominations become effective as soon as the publisher sends a copy of the book to each member of the prize committee. Any member of the Association can participate in the nomination process by requesting the publisher to submit a book to the committee. The deadline for submissions is February 1 of the award year. The President of the GSA will appoint the Book Prize Committees, who will select the winner from the pool of nominated books.

The DAAD Article Prize of the GSA

This prize is funded through the North American office of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and carries an award of $500. The prize is awarded under GSA rules by a GSA committee, alternating between the two groups of academic disciplines represented in the Association, and is presented during the banquet of the GSA Annual Conference. Eligibility is restricted to articles published in the German Studies Review.

(1) The award for articles in the fields of German language and literature, cultural studies, and the humanities is offered in odd-numbered years. All articles published during the preceding two years are eligible.

(2) The award for articles in the fields of history, political science, and other social sciences is offered in even-numbered years. All articles published during the preceding two years are eligible.
